Truly one of the most brilliant sportsman ever to pass through the gates of High School, Syed A.B commenced his athletic career very early. He starred in athletic in Standard 5. In 1970, at the tender age, he represented the Malacca Combined Schools Under 12 boys in the Malaysian Combines Schools Meet which was held in Ipoh. At this meet, he participated on the 200m and long jump and managed to enter the finals.
This achievements was only a prelude to his shining career in athletics which was to come. Each gathering year saw him surpassing his efforts in the previous years. While in Form 2, he represented the state in the Malaysian Combined Schools Meet again, taking part in the 4 by 100m and 200m. He also won the individual championship for D division when he won the 100m, 200m and long jump events during the School Sports Meet, in 1972.
In 1974, Syed was elected the Athletics Captain for his house, Famosa. During the School Sports Day, his athletic prowess was in full magnificent evidence when he streamed ahead and captured golds in the 100m, 200m, 400m and long jump events, thus emerging as the individual champion of Division Two. He established a record time of 23.4 secs. for his 200m. Due to his remarkable showing and his admirable consistency he again represented the next Malaysian Combined Schools Meet held in Kuantan. In this Meet he performed very well, being first in the 100m and 200m and second in the 400m.
1976 saw Syed in Penang, representing the State for the fourth time in the Malacca Combined Schools Meet. Although he was placed fourth, he managed to clock his best personal time yet of 22.9 secs. for the 200m.
This amazing arthlete broke two records in the School Sports Meet of 1977. He shattered his old record of 23.4 seconds for the 200m by establishing a new record of 23.1 seconds. He further clipped his old record of 52.9 seconds in the 400m by 0.1 sec. This new record stand at 52.8 sec. As expected, he was also first in the long jump event with a distance of 6.23m.
