The former State Surgeon of Malacca, Dr. Umapathy exemplifies the ideal model student who is not only all brains but also brawn, in his younger days.
Cricket was his spciality. Wherever he schooled or stayed, he was asked to represent that particular state or school. At college, he captained the Medical College Cricket Team and also the combined College Cricket Team in 1949. At university, he representated Singapore and when posted to Malacca General Hospital in 1953, he representated our state.
He did not confine his games to cricket. He too representated his Medical College in table tennis and hockey. Golf becomes his chief obsession.
Apart from his sports field, Dr. Umapathy’s academic and professional life is no less astounding or brilliant. He graduated from the University of Malaya, Singapore with M.B.B.S in 1953 and obtained F.R.C.S.E. in Edinburgh in 1962.
He served in Malacca as House Master (1953), Kuantan as Medical Officer (1955), Malacca again as Registrar (1959), Alor Star as Surgeon after completing his studies at Edinburgh (1959-1962), Kuala Lumpur as Surgeon and finally back again to Malacca General Hospital (1965) where he took over as State Surgeon in 1972.
He was Chairman of the Board of Governors of Bandar Hilir English School 1, member of Board of Governors our MHS and also member of College of Surgeon of Malaysia Council.
